Are You Talking to the Right Audience for Your Business Goals?

Hi Reader,

I promised on LinkedIn that my next newsletter would talk about B2B/B2C. So, here goes!

Turns out, I’ve been running two businesses all along.

I didn’t plan it that way. It just...happened.
(That’s the beauty and the chaos of a flowy--VERY Pisces--business model, right?)

For about two years, I thought I was solely a consultant. Then I realized Katalyst is both B2B and B2C.

I serve organizations through fractional and project-based consulting. (B2B)

And I serve people—mostly women of color entrepreneurs—through community, retreats, and business coaching. (B2C)

It’s a lot. And I had to learn that navigating both takes a completely different mindset, marketing strategy, and energy.

But here’s what I’ve learned...and what might help you if you’re building a business that touches both worlds, too.

🧩 What You Need to Know About B2B vs. B2C

Decision-making process

B2B = Long game. Multiple decision-makers, contracts, procurement, and bureaucracy.

B2C = Shorter cycles. Emotion drives action. Personal connection and story (and how will what you have to offer make my immediate life better in a very specific way) matter most.

Value proposition

B2B = Efficiency, ROI, and risk reduction.

B2C = Identity, transformation, convenience, personal improvement, joy.

Marketing psychology

B2B = Rational and data-driven.

B2C = Emotional and aspirational...improvement driven.

Sales channels

B2B = Proposals, networking, LinkedIn, and (if it's your thing) RFPs.

B2C = Social platforms, email, community, and direct storytelling.

🌱 What You Can Do Right Now

Get crystal clear on who you serve.

Are you talking to an organization or a person?

If it’s a person—make her real. Give her a story, fears, and desires.

Repackage what you already have.

Turn your knowledge into offerings that meet people where they are.

That could be a toolkit, a retreat, a course, or a membership.

Build visibility with humans, not logos.

Your future clients are scrolling or even just festering with a problem that they don't even know where to begin looking to resolve.

Show your face. Share your story. Meet new people personally so you can build relationship and get referrals. Let them feel you or understand how you can fix specific problems.

Learn what success looks like in each lane.

For B2B—it’s contracts, retainers, and partnerships.

For B2C—it’s trust, which leads to conversions and growth.

If you’re ready to figure that out for yourself...to build your consulting business around your version of freedom, alignment, and purpose…

Hey Reader, Well, this was a fun surprise.I discovered today that theGrio recently featured Katalyst and my work in a story about why Black women are rethinking what success is supposed to feel like. Outlets publishing things about us without me even knowing is definitely a new business (and life!) level unlocked.I’ve been talking about this for years. For so many women I work with who have pivoted to independent consulting or are considering it, the question isn’t simply, “How do I become...

Hey Reader, Something dropped yesterday that I think every nonprofit consultant needs to know about. And I want to give you my honest take before the panic sets in. On August 31, Candid made its AI fundraising assistant broadly available to Candid Search users. It can now help organizations find aligned funders, evaluate eligibility, analyze award history, recommend an ask amount, build prospect pipelines, and draft initial letters of inquiry. In plain terms: the tool does a significant...

Hey, Reader, This is Part 2 on yesterday's email. Let’s calculate EBITDA. EBITDA stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. For a small consulting practice, think of it as an operating health check: How much did the business produce after covering the normal costs of delivering the work and running the business? The calculation changes slightly depending on how you pay yourself. Let’s use a $150,000 consulting practice. If you pay yourself through payroll:...
